the online live music gig guide for birmingham & the midlands

Classique Baroque

Bridging the transition from the Renaissance into the Classical music era, the Baroque period (roughly 1600 to 1750) brought us some of the most beautiful, and most memorable, melodies were ever written – none more famous, perhaps than Pachelbel’s contemplative Canon or Bach’s restful Air. However, it is Vivaldi’s group of four seasonal violin concertos that linger longest in the heart and mind: bridging the year from rousing Spring to frosty Winter. The same composer’s concertos for guitar, and for two violins, prove Vivaldi was no one-hit wonder, either; just as Purcell’s increasingly powerful Chacony proves that great English music existed long before Elgar was born! A perfect evening of music to welcome the approaching summer!
